One of our school values is that we are ‘A community of fun and energy’ and this is in evidence every day in the learning environment. Across the school, most subjects are class taught to a class group with an average of 18 pupils. This enables teachers to provide individual attention, to consolidate basic skills, and to accelerate the attainment of high achievers.
In our Pre-Prep and Prep schools we have an impressive offer of Modern Foreign Languages, which, along with PE and Creative Arts, are taught by specialist teachers. Core subject learning gives pupils an excellent foundation of key skills and knowledge, and these provide confidence to be creative across the board. Literacy and numeracy are a priority at Sancton Wood. In English, pupils are given a sound grounding in grammar, punctuation, spelling, handwriting and reading comprehension. This is the foundation upon which the pupils are challenged to reach high standards of attainment in creative expression. In Mathematics, concrete experience and regular mental arithmetic practice form the basis for using and applying mathematical principles to problem-solving activities
Pupils have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of computers in the multimedia Study Skills room. We also run accelerated opportunities in English, Maths and Science from Y5 upwards, with these students having regular sessions with Senior specialist teachers.
At the Senior School, the provision includes a wide range of lessons, with lessons in research, analysis and presentation and Creative Studies forming part of the curriculum at KS3. At GCSE we expand our offering to include GCSE Astronomy, Business Studies, Classics, Philosophy & Ethics and Sociology.
Sancton Wood has a thriving enrichment programme and as part of this, students can study for additional qualifications in a variety of areas from Microsoft certified courses, Coursera awards, Crest Awards in Science and more.
