Enrichment & Extension
In addition to our broad curriculum we offer a wide number of activities which enrich and extend our students. Across the year we offer more than 40 lunchtime and after-school clubs. Some of these are run by Sancton Wood teachers and some by external instructors such as Yoga and Ballet. Some of our clubs run all year, whilst others change on a termly basis to ensure there is something for the widest possible range of interests.
Here is a small flavour of clubs on offer:
Chess club: for all levels of ability. Prep pupils can take part in the UK Schools Chess Challenge.
Code club: learn programming and design and create computer games.
Sports clubs: each term a wide variety of specific sports clubs are available.
Our recent inspection gave us the top grade for extra curricular provision, stating that, ‘the provision for curricular and extra curricular provision is excellent.’ and that because of it, ‘pupils develop a wide range of skills and interests.’
Drama: We provide a wide variety of curricular and extra-curricular drama opportunities for our students, these range from clubs and productions in school, workshops and visits from external providers, to West-End theatre trips and external performances at professional venues.
Music: Our students enjoy music. Their activities vary from composing their work to joining in the extra curricular provision such as choir and orchestra. Older students benefit from our Minstrels club which allows them to perform and rehearse with parents and staff in a Sancton Wood ‘house band’.
The majority of our pupils learn an instrument; taught by a team of visiting specialists and our own music teachers.
Monday morning Prep assemblies provide a good opportunity to play or sing for peers, and Upper pupils often come along to perform, providing inspiration for their younger peers.
Whole school concerts are popular with pupils and parents alike; each term we put on an evening of music, this is an excellent opportunity for all pupils to perform in front of a significant audience.
Sport: We have good provision for Sport at Sancton Wood. Using Fenners (the University Cricket facilities located next to the school) and the nearby leisure centre and pool at Parkside for our lessons.
In addition to the inter house and local sports fixtures that punctuate the year, we take part in the regional and national tournaments.
We offer a good range of extra curricular activities. These include table tennis, rugby, football, netball, cricket and cross country. Other enrichment includes Dance, Yoga & Ballet.
Many pupils are members of sports and dance clubs outside school, and achieve considerable success at high level. Previously the school has boasted county cricketers, hockey players in the Cambridgeshire Junior Development Centre, footballers at Cambridge and Norwich academy and national level Lacrosse players.
