Our Greek Adventure: A Journey Through History and Culture

Y11 students summarise their recent trip to Greece to support their Classics course…..

Day 1: Exploring the Parthenon and Its Museum

Our adventure began with a visit to the iconic Parthenon, a magnificent temple dedicated to Athena, perched atop the Athenian Acropolis, the highest point in the city. The Parthenon, with its rich history, offered a glimpse into ancient Greek civilization. The adjacent museum provided an in-depth look at artifacts and sculptures, enriching our understanding.

Day 2: The Oracle of Delphi and Culinary Delights

On our second day, we took a four-hour coach ride to the Oracle of Delphi. Guided by an expert, we explored the many temples and the ancient stadium where the city of Delphi hosted its own version of the Olympic Games. The panoramic views were breath taking. The priests and priestesses of the Oracle were known for their prophecies, guiding leaders in both civil and military matters. We also wandered through the town of Delfoi and ate delicious gyros. The Delphi Museum allowed us to see the intricate metopes up close and personal

Day 3: Mycenae and the Corinth Canal

Our third day took us on a coach ride to the ancient city of Mycenae (with a stop at the Corinth Canal, an engineering marvel that began construction over 2000 years ago). Mycenae is a city, vividly described by Homer in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The massive stone walls, believed to be the work of Cyclopes, were awe-inspiring. The museum at Mycenae had various artifacts, from large amphoras for storing oil to tiny drinking bowls. We also explored the underground tomb of Atreus and the grand theatre of Epidaurus, renowned for its exceptional acoustics.

Day 4: Athens and the Temple of Olympian Zeus

On our final day, we returned to the heart of Athens for some leisurely shopping. We also visited the Temple of Olympian Zeus, a colossal structure that, despite its ruined state, was still impressive due to its sheer size. As our trip ended, we reflected on what an enriching opportunity this was to study the history and culture of the ancient Greek world.  We came back home with knowledge and memories that will stay with us forever.
