Annual Careers Day Inspires Senior School Students

Topics

On Wednesday, we held our annual Careers Day at the Senior School, providing our older students with a unique opportunity to hear from professionals across various industries. This event is designed to help students explore potential career paths and identify those that might suit their interests and skills.

The day began with an inspiring session hosted by our career specialist and Dukes partner, InvestIN, setting the tone for a day filled with exploration and discovery. Students then followed personalized schedules, choosing from an impressive array of 24 different career talks. The diverse topics included:

  • Animal Behaviour
  • Media
  • Medical Microbiology
  • Business
  • Software Development
  • Archaeology
  • Marketing
  • Fashion Design
  • Law
  • Accountancy
  • Global Medical Affairs
  • Professional Football
  • Business Leadership
  • Medical Statistics
  • Scientific Research and Development
  • Illustration
  • Marine Biology
  • Theoretical Physics
  • Homeland Security
  • Osteopathy

Careers Day is a key component of our broader Careers and Post-16 programme, which was recognized last year by the Independent School of the Year Awards and made it to the national finals. The importance of career education in senior school cannot be overstated. Careers Day plays a crucial role in this programme, bringing abstract concepts to life and potentially sparking interest in future academic or professional pursuits. Even if a particular talk doesn’t resonate with every student, the experience is valuable, offering insights and learning opportunities.

As Y11 students prepare their sixth form applications, we also hosted our annual post-16 fair this week. This event allowed Y11 students to hear directly from local providers about the wide range of courses available and engage in one-on-one conversations with their staff. Meanwhile, Y10 students have started their Dukes Career School Programme, grasping the opportunity to book into one of InvestIN’s specialist weekends for in-depth work experience. Options include careers such as Doctor, Lawyer, Investment Banker, Engineer, Psychologist, Entrepreneur, Architect, Artist, Dentist, Computer Scientist, Fashion Designer, Forensic Scientist, Filmmaker, International Politics, and Vet.

We are already looking forward to next year’s event and aim to build on our current success by expanding our pool of speakers.
