Cambridgshire Chess Championship | Round 2 report

Saturday 11th November saw the second round of matches in the Cambridgeshire Schools Chess Competition.

Sancton Wood started the day in a high-flying 9th equal, however two matches against the B teams of two of the ‘big guns’, St Faith’s and King’s Cambridge Schools, were tough tasks.

In the first match against King’s B, all the individual games were hard fought and close, with chances to win for a couple of SW players. However in the end superior experience told, and King’s ran out 5-1 winners. The story was similar in the second round of matches, with St Faith’s B winning 4-2.

It was very heartening to see that a total of 8 players turned up for the event on Saturday, and with a maximum of 6 players allowed on one team, this meant a healthy competition for places! Every child played at least one match and again everyone really impressed me with their attitude and good sportsmanship on the day. Adam (Yr 6) was an excellent captain and led by example, winning both his games against tough opposition. Well done also to Arthur (Yr 6), Charlie (Yr 6), Lukas (Yr 6), Benjamin (Yr 6), Isaac (Yr 6), Morris (Yr 5) and Finlay (Yr 3) for their effort and attitude on the day.

The next round of matches is on December 2nd and I look forward to seeing another good turnout for that date.
