Sancton Wood emphasises the core curriculum of English, Maths, Science and Languages. Continuing the policy set in the junior school we maintain small class sizes, providing an enviable teacher to pupil ratio.
The curriculum is broad and balanced. Each year group studies class readers, poetry, plays, media and the purposes of writing. English literature provides the backbone of the curriculum involving study which offers links to written analysis and extension tasks. Pupils are encouraged to join our book groups, to visit the theatre and cinema and to enter writing competitions.
The aim of the maths syllabus is to provide practical study of functions, calculus, numerical methods and statistics.
Physics, Chemistry and Biology are taught separately and our aim is to give each student a sound scientific foundation using a mix of practical investigation, written work and class discussion. We have a well designed laboratory in addition to being able to visit the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory and Botanic Gardens.
Pupils are sensitively guided to make GCSE choices at the end of Year 9. They generally take 10 GCSEs and our results are consistently high.
