Match report by Team Captain Harry Cotton

Sancton Wood U11 Football team kicked off their season with a 13 goal thriller. The Unicorns made the short trip to Latham Road for an away fixture and local derby clash against arch rivals Stephen Perse.

The Unicorns were fired up and ready to break the curse of Latham Road where in the last fixture they lost 13-2. The match began at a high tempo with Stephen Perse taking an early lead after a long ball which was finished by their striker. Sancton Wood responded quickly with a phenomenal team goal which had every player involved, which was finally slotted away from the edge of the area.

Sancton Wood took the initiative and went 2-1 up. The lead was extended shortly afterwards to make it 3-1. Stephen Perse showed good character to get a goal back just before half time to go into the break at 3-2.

The break came at the right time for Stephen Perse and they looked very determined as the ref blew to signal the second half. They scored again to even things up at 3-3 and quickly scored again to take the lead. Sancton Wood came back to make it 4-4l but Stephen Perse were inspired by the home crowd and showed some good football to score two goals in quick succession. At 6-4 Sancton Wood looked beaten but saw a glimmer of hope when they made it 6-5 only to have their hopes dashed as Stephen Perse scored the winner just before full time. Final score 7-6 to Stephen Perse.

In a game was played in great spirit, and even though they lost the game, Sancton Wood should hold their heads up high to have competed in such a hard fought and closely contested game. Well done to everyone involved.
