On Friday 24th of March we are holding our annual Swimming Gala
for Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 from 1 – 3pm at Parkside Pools.
Each student will take part in two swimming races;
the Front Crawl (FC) and Back Crawl (BC).
Much consideration has been given into the planning of the Swimming Gala; ensuring it is as student centred as possible, providing maximal student wellbeing and achievement for each swimmer, as well as maintaining the focus as an inter-house swimming competition.
In support of our inter-house competition each student will be given a complimentary t-shirt, in their house colour, which they will wear when they are supporting their team mates on poolside.
Student wellbeing and achievement:
Prioritising the students and their wellbeing through ability matched races is our most important focus. Every swimmer will compete against peers of a similar swimming standard, based on the deductions of the swimming staff and assessments measured over the year. Every student, on the day, can therefore succeed within their peer group.
It’s important to note that the Gala must be about the individual students first, and houses second. Some races will have two or three swimmers from one house, and one or two from another, and this has happened because we are ensuring our first and most important priority is met; individual wellbeing and achievement.
Over the course of all the races combined, each house is involved in an almost identical number of races which balances out any discrepancies, where there are multiple swimmers in a race from one House.
Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 1pm – 3pm
The earlier start for this event allows the teachers and students to have a move friendly and personalised swimming gala for the Years 3 & 4. The start time is 1pm in the smaller – diving – pool with a few advanced Year 3 & 4 swimmers, later competing in the larger – competition – pool.
As students wait for their time to swim, they will be sat in their houses by the diving area, cheering on their team mates. To ensure our personalised approach to the Year 3 & 4 swimmers, the older class members from Years 5 & 6 will watch from the gallery and start their races after 1.30pm.
Additionally, we have asked Parkside Swimming Pool if we can use the lanes closest to the grandstand where parents are seated; alas, due to management protocol we must use the lanes by the windows.
Return to school, 3pm:
As you will appreciate, the logistics of 70 students, plus staff moving from pool side to the changing rooms and back to school can be a chaotic situation which we must embrace.
To ensure the endings to be as smooth as possible we would like all students to walk back to school with their classes and teachers, from where they will be pick up as usual. We would really like any parents to walk back with us and celebrate in our whole school success and then take their children home, from school.
We hope you are as excited as we are in this year’s swimming gala and look forward to seeing as many parents there as possible.
